Not for Everyone

You can’t be all things to all people. That’s a hard lesson - especially if you grew up in a perfectionist household like me, always trying to please everyone - to be the best at everything. Add a creative life path to the mix, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for artistic identity fears and the long, winding road of personal growth.

The upside? As you work through the discomfort of unlearning and relearning what truly makes you you, you also get to Marie Kondo the crap out of your psychological closet—keeping what works, what sparks something real.

The evolving result is that you can be many things to many people: strong and tender, wild and calm, serious and silly.

It’s in that spirit that I’m creating new work. Sometimes it’s serious and strong, other times wild and playful—but never perfect. At least that’s what I hope some of you find.

A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.

New Work - I’ve just ‘finished’ a couple of new paintings—Texas Triple and Caldera—in time for the upcoming Corrales Art Studio Tour (CAST), happening this Saturday and Sunday, May 3–4, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

If you're local, stop by to visit the studio and see the work of the other talented artists showing here.

For more details, including a map and a full guide to all participating artists, visit the CAST website.

Major Gratitude - My painting Azúcar de Sandía took first place in the oil/acrylic category at the MasterWorks New Mexico show last month. Thank you to the Rio Grande Art Association and its judges for this fantastic honor. I’m extremely grateful.

On the Newstands - There’s an article about the Corrales Art Studio Tour in the current issue of Southwest Art Magazine featuring several of the artists, including a bit about my work and a generous pic of Good Luck. And my friend Marvin Curl made the current issue of International Artist Magazine with a little bit about my process of painting his award winning portait.

Print Drop - I did a small run of prints of two recent paintings: Good Luck (12 x 16 in.) and Azúcar de Sandía (15 x 15 in.). They’re available now in my online store.

On the Studio Floor - Among the art books stacked next to my easel is KITAJ by Marco Livingston.

Playing Now - Here’s a collection of what’s currently playing in the studio…
